ST GEORGE HOUSE

St George House presented a unique and rewarding challenge: to reintroduce warmth, charm, and period character into a Victorian home that had been stripped of its original soul. Formerly used as a rental property for many years, the house had gradually lost any remaining sense of beauty or historical identity.

Unlike many period projects where original features are carefully restored and celebrated, this home required a more imaginative approach - rebuilding character from the ground up while working within a carefully considered budget. The client entrusted Khaya Studio with the task of transforming a once-forgotten interior into a home rich in personality, authenticity, and quiet elegance.

DESIGN INTENT

With budget firmly in mind, structural interventions were kept intentionally minimal. Just one wall was removed and a single doorway repositioned to improve flow and functionality, allowing resources to be directed towards reinstating character through materials, texture, and detailing.

The tired carpets were removed to reveal a blank canvas, replaced with reclaimed timber flooring sourced from a local reclamation yard. These beautifully timeworn boards immediately introduced warmth, depth, and a sense of history, their patina and imperfections telling stories of the past while offering a sustainable and environmentally responsible solution.

To further enhance the period feel, plaster coving was introduced, adding architectural interest and restoring a sense of Victorian charm that had long been absent.

The furnishing scheme continued this vintage narrative. In the dining area, an extendable farmhouse table was paired with classic Ercol Windsor Quaker chairs and a characterful old church pew, creating a welcoming space designed for everyday family life and shared gatherings. The living room was layered with carefully sourced vintage pieces, each chosen for its quiet sense of history and timeless appeal.

A cohesive colour palette was developed to allow flow between rooms, while still giving each space its own distinct personality. Mirrors and artwork were strategically placed to soften proportions, reflect light, and create a sense of airiness and calm throughout the home.

THE RESULT

The completed St George House is a testament to what can be achieved with creativity, intention, and thoughtful design. Despite a modest budget, the home has been transformed into a space rich in character and warmth - one that feels authentic, lived-in, and deeply inviting.

This project beautifully demonstrates how sensitive interior design for Victorian properties can restore soul and elegance, proving that meaningful, enduring interiors are not defined by excess, but by imagination and care.
