GREEN LIBRARY DESIGN
Once the heart of the home, this room had gradually lost its sense of purpose following a substantial extension. What had previously been a central gathering space became overlooked and underused, quietly waiting to be reimagined. The client approached Khaya Studio to breathe new life into the room and restore its relevance within the flow of the home.

During earlier conversations around the extension, the client had expressed a desire for bespoke bookshelves to house her much-loved book collection. While this hadn’t been possible within the new addition, it presented the perfect opportunity to re-envision this forgotten space as a calm, characterful retreat.

DESIGN INTENT
​
Our intention was to create a soulful sanctuary - a place to retreat from the busyness of family life, curl up with a book, and enjoy moments of quiet reflection. Nestled within the heart of the home, the Green Library was conceived as a richly layered room that celebrated colour, character, and personal history.

We embraced colour drenching, enveloping the walls in a deep, soothing green to instantly ground the space and create an intimate, cocooning atmosphere. Bespoke built-in shelving was designed and crafted to showcase the client’s treasured book collection, offering both generous storage and a striking architectural focal point.
​
At the centre of the room, the original fire surround was carefully restored, reinstating the warmth and heritage of the property and anchoring the new design in its historic roots.

THE RESULT

The finished Green Library is a deeply personal and inviting space, layered with meaning and memory. Curated antiques, cherished objects, and thoughtful detailing combine to give the room a collected, timeless quality - one that feels as though it has evolved naturally over time.

Now restored as a true heart of the home, the library offers a cosy retreat for reading, conversation, and quiet moments. It stands as a testament to how considered interior design can transform a forgotten room into a space rich with atmosphere, purpose, and emotional connection.
