ST GEORGE HOUSE
The St George house presented a unique challenge: to breathe warmth, charm, and period character back into a Victorian home that had been stripped of its soul - all within a carefully considered budget. Through creative vision and resourceful design, we were able to restore personality and authenticity to this once-forgotten space.
To maximise the available resources, structural changes were kept to a minimum, with just a single wall removed and one doorway repositioned to improve flow and functionality. The focus, instead, was placed on reinstating the home’s inherent character through considered materials, texture, and detail. Worn carpets were removed and replaced with beautiful reclaimed timber flooring, sourced from a local reclamation yard. These timeworn boards, with their rich grain and patina, brought immediate warmth and depth to the rooms - their imperfections telling stories of the past while offering a sustainable, environmentally responsible solution.
The vintage narrative continued through carefully sourced furniture and collected pieces. In the dining area, an inviting extendable farmhouse table was paired with classic Ercol Windsor Quaker chairs and a charming old church pew, creating a space both timeless and welcoming. The living room was thoughtfully furnished with an elegant mix of vintage finds, each item adding its own quiet history to the home. Feature walls were introduced to refine the proportions of the rooms, while strategically placed mirrors softened the space and reflected light throughout, adding a sense of airiness and calm. This project is a wonderful example of how, with imagination and intention, even a modest budget can be transformed into a home rich in character and quiet beauty.
