If you’ve never worked with an interior designer before, one of the things you might be curious about is how trade discounts work. It’s a question I’m asked often, and it’s worth explaining because it can actually be a big benefit of working with a designer.

What Is a Trade Discount?

Interior designers often build trusted relationships with suppliers - from fabric houses and furniture makers to lighting brands and bespoke joiners. Because we regularly bring these suppliers repeat business, they offer us a trade discount, which usually ranges from 10% to 40% off standard retail pricing.

This system works well for everyone:

• The supplier benefits from steady, loyal business.

• The designer can source quality products at competitive rates.

• And most importantly - clients get access to pieces that are often better made, longer-lasting, and sometimes not even available on the high street.

How Do Different Designers Handle Discounts?

Every interior designer has their own approach:

• Some keep the trade discount as part of their fee structure.

• Some split it with clients.

• Others, like me, take an “open books” approach.

My Open Books Policy

For clients who use my full design service, I pass on my trade discount in full and simply apply a very small mark-up to cover the administration of purchasing. This way, my clients enjoy a genuine saving overall, while still receiving access to carefully selected, exclusive suppliers.

I believe transparency builds trust - and I want my clients to feel confident that they’re getting the very best value.
