"Buy Less, Choose Well" - Vivienne Westwood

The late Vivienne Westwood famously said: “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” Although she was talking about fashion, the sentiment applies perfectly to interior design - and it’s a philosophy I wholeheartedly embrace in my work across Bristol, Bath, and Somerset.
In a world of fast furniture and ever-changing trends, it can be tempting to buy quickly and cheaply. But when it comes to creating a home that feels both personal and timeless, investing thoughtfully is almost always the better choice.
Why Buying Less Matters
We’ve all had the experience of buying something in a rush, only to realise later that it doesn’t quite fit the space, the style, or our lifestyle. These pieces often end up being replaced within a few years - which is not only costly but also wasteful.
By pausing and considering carefully, you make room for pieces that will serve you for decades, not just seasons.
Choosing Well for Your Home
In interior design, “choosing well” means:
Selecting furniture and finishes that are built to last.
Prioritising craftsmanship and provenance.
Choosing materials that age gracefully, like walnut, oak, brass, marble, and linen.
Opting for designs that feel timeless rather than tied to a fleeting trend.
For period and heritage homes in particular, this approach ensures that new additions harmonise with the architecture while still feeling fresh and relevant for contemporary living.

Making It Last
When you buy with care, your home becomes layered with stories and meaning. A well-chosen armchair becomes a place where generations gather; a hand-crafted dining table becomes the heart of family life. These pieces age with you, gaining character rather than losing appeal.
And with the right interior design guidance, you can ensure your investment not only lasts but truly enhances your everyday life.
How I Bring This Philosophy to My Projects
In my design studio, I encourage clients to focus on quality over quantity. That doesn’t always mean spending more - often it means spending more wisely. By drawing on my network of trusted suppliers and craftspeople, I help clients access pieces that are beautifully made, fairly priced, and designed to stand the test of time.
A Home That Endures
Vivienne Westwood’s words remain as relevant today as ever. By buying less and choosing well, you not only create a home that feels authentic and enduring - you also make a sustainable choice for the future.
