How to mix and match antiques

There’s a certain magic to a home layered with beautiful, storied pieces. Antiques have a way of adding depth, character and soul to an interior — telling tales of craftsmanship, heritage, and the lives they’ve touched along the way. But mixing pieces from different eras and styles can feel a little daunting if you’re unsure where to start.

The truth is, your home doesn’t need to be a perfectly preserved time capsule from one particular period. I’m a big believer in buying what you love. Surrounding yourself with objects and furniture that resonate with you will always feel authentic, warm and inviting.

The Eras and How They Differ

Antique furniture typically falls into various historical categories — from the elegance of Georgian and Victorian to the bold geometry of Art Deco or the sleek lines of mid-century modern. Each has its own language of materials, detailing and proportion. And while it’s fascinating to understand these periods, you certainly don’t need to limit yourself to just one.

In fact, some of the most sophisticated interiors are those that mix a refined Georgian chest with a contemporary armchair, or a rustic farmhouse table with 1970s Murano glass lighting. It speaks of a life well-travelled and an eye for beautiful things.

Creating Cohesion in an Eclectic Home

The key to successfully mixing antiques lies in finding common threads to bring the space together. This might be a recurring palette — perhaps deep inky blues, rich warm woods and aged brass — or a shared sense of texture and patina. Finishes and colour stories are wonderful tools to harmonise different pieces, while thoughtful placement helps a room feel balanced and considered.

Artwork is another lovely way to thread personality through a home. A beautifully curated gallery wall of paintings, prints and objects can span centuries, yet feel utterly harmonious when united by tone or framing.
