Before & After: Failand Farm

There's something incredibly rewarding about transforming a room that has fallen out of use into a space that becomes the heart of the home once again. This was certainly the case for our recent project at Failand Farm, a beautiful stone farmhouse nestled in the countryside just outside Bristol.
As an Interior Designer in Bristol, many of our projects involve helping clients reconnect with their homes, creating spaces that feel both beautiful and practical while respecting the character of the building. Failand Farm provided the perfect opportunity to do just that.
The Before
Although the formal sitting room enjoyed wonderful proportions and breathtaking views across the surrounding gardens and fields, it felt tired and underutilised. Dated finishes, wallpaper and a lack of cohesion meant the room wasn't being enjoyed to its full potential.
The clients wanted the space to feel lighter, fresher and more welcoming, while remaining sympathetic to the age and architecture of the farmhouse.
The Design Process
At Khaya Studio, every project begins with understanding both the property and the people who live there.
During the design process, we developed a scheme inspired by the surrounding countryside, introducing a palette of soft greens and warm amber tones that reflected the landscape beyond the windows. The clients quickly connected with these colours and were particularly drawn to the warmth of engineered oak flooring, which became a key feature within the scheme.
Having always dreamed of living in a home with exposed beams, the client was delighted when we sourced faux ceiling beams that complemented the new flooring and added architectural character to the room.
Existing wallpaper was removed, walls were redecorated, new lighting was introduced throughout and bespoke window treatments were commissioned in a soft green patterned fabric. These additions frame the beautiful views without competing with them, allowing nature to remain the star of the show.
The After
The completed room feels calm, inviting and effortlessly connected to its surroundings.
One of the most significant changes was relocating the television into a recessed alcove, which was painted a deep green to help it visually disappear. This allows the elegant marble fireplace to take centre stage as the room's focal point.
Furniture was carefully arranged to create a more intimate seating area, making the generous proportions of the room feel cosy and welcoming. An antique side table sourced from a local market now serves as a charming drinks station, while a playful squiggle-framed mirror and floral wall lights bring personality and warmth to the space.
The result is a timeless living room that feels as though it has always belonged within the farmhouse - a space designed for family evenings, entertaining friends and enjoying the changing seasons.
