ROATH PARK HOUSE
Roath Park House is a distinguished Victorian property, set along a tree-lined street and rich with original architectural detail. The building’s intricate carved stone façade sets the tone for what lies within - a home full of period charm, including original Victorian floor tiles, stained glass windows and doors, panelling, picture rails and delicate ceiling mouldings.

As a characterful period property that had recently been extended, Roath Park House presented a wonderful opportunity to carefully integrate contemporary living within a historic framework. The brief was to reimagine the home in a way that enhanced its functionality for modern family life, while preserving its warmth, individuality and architectural integrity.

DESIGN INTENT
The client sought our expertise to create a home that felt both considered and comfortable, where original features were celebrated rather than overshadowed. Like many Victorian houses of this era, the property’s elongated proportions created a sense of formality and distance - particularly through the long hallway.

To soften this and create a more welcoming arrival, we introduced a defined entrance zone, anchored by striking artwork and a beautifully styled sideboard. This simple but intentional intervention established a gentle transition from the outside world into the calm of the home.

In the living room, inspiration was drawn directly from the stained glass French doors, setting the scene for a soft pink and bright ochre colour palette. Furniture was carefully positioned to counterbalance the length of the room, creating a more intimate seating arrangement. The piano now has it's own space - a place to pause rather than pass through. Layered lighting and considered accessories add warmth and depth.

The dining room takes its cues from the original Victorian tiled floor, with a charming green tone used to enhance the white panelling. An Ercol dining table and chairs were selected as a natural continuation of the home’s eclectic furnishing scheme, bringing together different eras in a way that feels cohesive and relaxed.

Further within the house, the often-overlooked rear room was transformed into a dual-purpose gym and laundry space, balancing practicality with thoughtful design. Beyond, the once cold, paved garden was reimagined as a lush, green retreat - a welcoming space for alfresco dining and relaxed gatherings with family and friends.

THE RESULT
Throughout the home, each space was given its own distinct personality while remaining part of a cohesive whole. The downstairs WC was finished with a vibrant yellow floral wallpaper, bringing a sense of joy and surprise, while the family bathroom features antique pieces that marry function with character.

Upstairs, all four bedrooms were thoughtfully designed to feel light, calm and uplifting. Carefully curated wallpapers were used to create feature headboards, allowing pattern and texture to take centre stage without overwhelming the rooms. Gracefully scaled furniture and a refined palette ensure each space feels balanced and comfortable.

Across the house, a curated collection of art, objects and furnishings bridges the decades - respectfully honouring the property’s early 20th-century origins while embracing the lifestyle and personality of today’s owners. The result is a home that feels layered, lived-in and deeply personal: a Victorian house brought thoughtfully into the present day.
