What Is Circular Design?

In a world where trends move quickly and resources are finite, circular design offers a refreshing and responsible alternative - one that celebrates longevity, craftsmanship, and conscious choices.
At Khaya Studio, my approach to design is rooted in creating interiors that last - homes that age gracefully, function beautifully, and tread lightly on the planet. Circular design lies at the heart of that philosophy.
Designing for longevity
In simple terms, circular design is about moving away from the “buy, use, discard” cycle and instead designing with the full lifespan of materials and products in mind. It’s about asking questions like:
Can this be repaired, reupholstered, or repurposed?
Is it made from renewable or recycled materials?
Will it still be beautiful and functional in ten years’ time?
By choosing well-made, timeless pieces - whether new or vintage - we reduce waste and create homes that feel enduring and authentic.
Embracing the beauty of reuse
As an interior designer working across Bristol, Bath, and Somerset, I often incorporate antiques, reclaimed materials, and locally made furniture into my projects. These pieces bring character and story to a space - they connect the past with the present and add a depth that new, mass-produced items simply can’t replicate.
Circular design isn’t about austerity - it’s about appreciation. It’s about cherishing what already exists, reimagining where we can, and celebrating craftsmanship that stands the test of time.
Sustainable, elegant, and human
Circular design and timeless interior design go hand in hand. By focusing on quality over quantity, we create homes that are both sustainable and deeply personal. Natural materials like wood, wool, linen, and stone not only support wellbeing but also age beautifully, developing a patina that tells the story of a life well lived.
For me, the most elegant interiors are the ones that evolve slowly - with intention, care, and meaning. That’s the essence of circular design: creating homes that are kind to both people and the planet.
If you’d like to explore how sustainable and circular design principles can be woven into your own home, I’d love to help. I offer interior design and project management services across Bristol, Bath, Clevedon, and Somerset, specialising in period property renovations and heritage homes that combine elegance, practicality, and conscience.
✨ Beautiful design doesn’t have to cost the earth - literally or figuratively.
