Utility Room & Study Transformation | Interior Designer Bristol

Sometimes the most impactful transformations happen in the rooms that are often overlooked.

In this Before & After: Colchester Avenue Project, our focus was on elevating two hardworking spaces - the utility room and the study - ensuring they felt considered, cohesive and uplifting rather than purely functional.

For many homeowners in Bristol, Bath and Somerset, it’s these secondary rooms that quietly shape daily life. When designed well, they enhance routine and bring calm to the everyday.

Here’s how we approached the transformation.

The Utility Room: From Problem Area to Practical Beauty

The Before

The starting point was to address practical challenges within the utility room. Damp issues needed resolving, and the layout lacked cohesion. Appliances felt exposed, storage was inconsistent, and the overall atmosphere was purely utilitarian.

While utility rooms are naturally hardworking, they need not feel clinical or neglected.

The Practical Improvements

The walls were boarded to properly resolve the damp, creating a sound and stable foundation.

From there, we commissioned bespoke cabinetry to neatly house the washing machine and dryer, creating a streamlined and integrated layout. Concealing appliances immediately softened the room visually, making it feel intentional rather than improvised.

A new sink and tap were introduced to improve functionality, alongside open shelving and woven basket storage to keep essentials organised but accessible.

These changes dramatically improved efficiency while maintaining visual calm.

Across my interior design projects in Bristol and Bath, I often remind clients that practicality and beauty are not mutually exclusive. The two should always work together.

The Power of Colour in Small Spaces

Colour played a transformative role in this room.

The cabinetry was finished in a bright, uplifting coral - a confident and joyful choice that instantly changed the atmosphere. Paired with soft, warm pink walls, the combination created depth without overwhelming the compact space.

Utility rooms are often treated as afterthoughts in many Somerset and Cotswolds homes. Here, we chose instead to celebrate the space.

The result is a room that feels:

  • Energetic yet balanced

  • Organised and purposeful

  • Warm rather than sterile

  • Uplifting during everyday tasks

Because daily rituals deserve thoughtful surroundings too.

Before & After: The Study

Revealing Original Character

The focus in the study shifted from problem-solving to restoration.

The tired carpet was removed to reveal the original floorboards beneath - a discovery that brought immediate warmth and authenticity to the room. Once sanded back, the boards introduced texture and history that no new flooring could replicate.

In many period properties across Bristol and Bath, beautiful features are simply waiting to be rediscovered.

Introducing a Confident Focal Point

The built-in cupboard was refreshed in a deep, inky blue - creating a confident focal point within an otherwise calm palette.

This subtle injection of colour adds depth and personality without overpowering the room’s proportions.

The overall scheme remains restrained and cohesive, allowing the architectural features and materials to take centre stage.

Why These Spaces Matter

When working as an interior designer in Bristol and Somerset, I often find that clients initially prioritise kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms - understandably so.

But once the secondary rooms are addressed, the entire home feels elevated.

Well-designed utility rooms and studies bring:

  • Calm to daily routines

  • Efficient storage

  • Improved organisation

  • A sense of cohesion throughout the house

They remove friction from everyday life.

And often, they become unexpectedly joyful spaces.

The After: Calm, Characterful & Considered

The Colchester Avenue Project demonstrates how even modest interventions can dramatically shift how a home feels.

Without structural changes, we achieved:

  • A resolved and damp-free utility space

  • Integrated, bespoke cabinetry

  • A bold yet balanced colour story

  • Restored original flooring

  • A confident study focal point

Most importantly, both rooms now feel aligned with the rest of the home - thoughtful, warm and intentional.
